Making your first moves in Peg Solitaire

Take a moment with Peg Solitaire before moving to another game. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Something to practise

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Start here and follow along

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Keyboard and screen controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

See the idea in action

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

A useful caution

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
