How to Play Nim

Game guide · SZWSXS

Understand the basics of Nim

Start Nim by looking at the playing area and its controls. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Look at what changes after your first action. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Try a more deliberate round

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

What you are aiming for

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

How a round unfolds

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Your inputs

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

With piles of 1 and 2, a move may empty one pile, but cannot remove one counter from both in the same turn. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Choose a deliberate next step.

A useful caution

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Check the rule before repeating the action. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
